Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
-Evaluation of the aerodynamic impact of off-tolerance manufacturing discrepancies on the outer surface of the aircraft. Collaborate with manufacturing and operations teams to solve issues and identify root causes.
-Evaluation and comparison of aerodynamic configuration design alternatives, to support product development and design decision making
-Generation of databases representing aerodynamic aircraft characteristics for a range of off-design flight conditions and states, as required by internal clients (e.g. Performance, Flight Dynamics and Loads)
-Support to the fleet of aircraft in operation in the field, regarding aerodynamic discrepancies caused operational issues or incidents. Collaborate with Product Support and clients for resolution
-Participate in the design process for aerodynamic surfaces, either for future programs or for modifications of current aircraft
-Participate in the development of future Methods and Tools for use by the Applied Aero team
-Produce report documents and presentations for internal clients, leadership and certification authorities as required
Solid knowledge of:
-Fluid Mechanics and Numerical Methods in general
-Applied Aerodynamics in particular, backed by applicable coursework or verifiable professional experience
Verifiable experience in:
-Solution of aircraft Aerodynamics problems, related to both low and high speed flight regimes
-High-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to compute the external flowfield around aircraft configurations using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solvers, including: Generation of three-dimensional CFD meshes around complex bodies, using software such as: Gridgen, Pointwise, VGRID, ICEM-CFD, Star-CCM+, or equivalent Setup and running of high-fidelity CFD solver software, such as: USM3D, NSU3D, STAR-CCM+, Fluent, FUN3D, CFX, CFD++, OpenFOAM, or equivalent Post-processing and visualization of CFD flow solutions using software packages such as Tecplot, Fieldview, or equivalent
-Experience with semi-empirical Aerodynamics methods to estimate impacts due to manufacturing discrepancies
-Generation and manipulation of geometric models using high-end CAD software packages capable of complex surface representations, such as CATIA V5, Rhino or equivalent
-Proficient in one or more programming languages to generate tools and scripts in support to the work. Options include (but not limited to): FORTRAN 90/95, C/C++, Matlab, Java, and Python
-Good communication skills, including preparation and presentation of briefings on technical results for different levels within the organization and interaction with internal clients and suppliers
-Ability to operate Unix and/or Linux operating systems
-Experience in the application of numerical optimization techniques coupled with analysis codes to solve engineering design problems, with focus on Applied Aerodynamics
-Wind-tunnel testing experience, particularly for aeronautical applications
-Familiarity with Flight Test methods and processes
-Familiarity with FAA 14 CFR, Part 25 regulations pertinent the certification of commercial aircraft Responsibilities include:
- Execute analysis of Aerodynamics problems of interest for aircraft programs and internal clients using the appropriate combination of CFD, semi-empirical and experimental techniques and other supporting data.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, a related curriculum, or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
- Five (5) years in the specific technical discipline or ten (10) years broad engineering experience in several technical disciplines with a Bachelor's degree. Experience credit will be considered for related advance degrees limited to 2 years for Master's Degree and 4 years for PhD in fields applicable to this job position.
