Job Description Works with internal and external customers to define and document performance and producibility options that meet the program goals and objectives. Writes plans (Contamination Control, Corrosion Control, Flammability Certification, Parts Materials and Processes) to provide design guidance and ensure contractual compliance. Prepares written reports, specifications and data analysis. Prepares and compiles test reports to support recommendations, qualifications and certifications. Presents results at the product team or organizational level. Reviews designs to ensure correct materials and processes are used and that regulatory issues (such as safety, environmental, flammability, export control) and contractual requirements are met. Provides guidance on producibility issues, Federal Aviation Administration [FAA] regulations, material and process selection, material compatibility, and substitutions to ensure compatibility of the design with the manufacturing process and end use environment. Provides input to customer service engineering to answer end item customer inquiries. Assesses parts, process and material failures using appropriate tools (root cause analysis, fishbone), instrumentation, tests, analysis, and data analysis to determine failure root cause and recommend corrective action. Provides technical expertise to facilitate the first manufacturing part and materials for smaller scale projects to ensure they meet requirements. Provides on-going support (optimization, trouble shooting, material review board [MRB], lean or improvement activities, process hazard safety analysis and hazard mitigation) to address issues. Defines the material and process test program per established guidelines and method, to characterize the materials' physical, chemical and mechanical properties, processing attributes and safety considerations. Documents material and process requirements to ensure that the mandate for the design of products and production goals are met. Develops an integrated project management plan for small focused efforts using existing requirements and specifications that includes: defining goals and objectives, obtaining customer concurrence, determining resources, defining tasks and key milestones (statement of work), developing project plan, scheduling (including precedence serial and parallel task), defining budget requirements based on project plan, obtaining customer program approval, executing the project, tracking and reporting status to ensure project meets technical, budget and schedule requirements. Qualifies selected materials systems to ensure conformance to requirements and may support test witnessing. Validates manufacturing process by planning and being directly involved in the fabrication of prototypes and scale-up parts, demonstrating manufacturing equipment and methods and conducting shop trials to ensure a robust process and supply chain. Assists in the evaluation of risk (stability, materials, cost, producibility, qualification, safety, schedule, weight) of the concept material systems using appropriate tools (such as cost model analysis, risk charts, project management) to identify and mitigate program risk. May interface with internal customers. Screens, evaluates and assesses the suitability of the materials, processes and systems. Works with internal or external resources to create, as required, new test methods, tools, equipment, prototypes, materials, and product related development. Compares processes and materials and selects candidate for qualification. Provides process training to Manufacturing and Engineering personnel by developing and disseminating training materials and tip sheets; and by performing classroom training and on-the-job instruction.
