This occupation requires the layout, fabrication and buildup of new and special type parts and components which are composed of various types of composites.
Includes all duties of the Plastic Fabricator, Senior (FMC01) plus works on first run parts and assemblies requiring the exercise of knowledge of composite shop theory, practice and ingenuity in developing and selecting the most effective fabrication methods.
Lays out, fabricates and builds first run composite and related structural assemblies from prints, sketches and written or verbal instructions.
Would include such operations as: Mix combinations of molding and laminating resins to prescribed formulas; lay-up composite and fiberglass cloth to established contours; incorporate and insert bushings, locating pins, etc., in laminates; layout, cut and set up vacuum bags as required for curing laminates.
Lays out and fabricates various types of first person shop aids, templates and holding fixtures to be used in carrying out the above mentioned assignments.
Sets up and operates single spindle winding equipment, and cutting table. Prepares shapes on special equipment for composite assemblies and parts. Monitor autoclaves.
Checks tolerance requirements. Checks first run parts for overall dimension conformity to specifications, defects, and makes recommendations for correction of molds, dies, etc., and new methods of techniques used.
Conveys information to lesser skilled classification in the use of new techniques and methods of fabrication, as needed, provided it does not conflict with the duties of a lead worker.
Equipment used: Autoclaves, ovens, mixers, sanders, grinders, hoists, vacuum pumps, hydraulic presses, routers and other hand tools.
High school education or equivalent or technical school training or sufficient job experience to adequately perform the work assignments of this classification. Normally, two and one-half years in composite fabrication work of the type described herein. Requires knowledge of the forms characteristics of plastic and resins. Also requires a thorough knowledge of shop practice and procedures.
Requires ability to read and fabricate parts to complicated blueprints and to use various types of precision measuring instruments.
