Director - External Reporting and Technical Accounting

Finance is seeking an experienced technical accountant to lead External Reporting within the Financial Reporting department. The primary responsibilities of the Director are to oversee the preparation of the company's financial statements and ensure their compliance with accounting rules and regulations. As part of this function, this person is the contact for Delta's business units to address technical accounting questions and is expected to research, present, and document accounting conclusions for new business initiatives and contracts. The person must partner with key division leaders to help understand the accounting presentation as business initiatives are developed.

Primary Functions

Oversees and ensures the timely and accurate externally reported financial statements (Form 10-K, 10-Q and other filings), as well as supporting the Investor Relations department.
Leads the adoption and implementation of new accounting standards.
Participates in industry groups and the accounting standard setters' process. Active participation is important to ensure Delta's voice is heard as standards are developed.
Leads the company's fixed asset accounting, debt and lease, and the accounting for financial instruments. As such, this individual will work closely with the treasury team and fuel management.
Works closely with the company's auditors.
Communication skills are critical as this person will present to Ernst & Young and senior leaders the justifications for accounting conclusions and draft position papers with supporting references.
Works with team members to develop specific behaviors, skills or knowledge needed to ensure sustained performance and to prepare for success in new responsibilities.
Develops both strategic and tactical plans that create a safety-conscious environment resulting in employee safety and wellbeing.

Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in accounting or other related field required
Certified Public Accountant required
Experience in a large public accounting firm preferred
Successfully oversight of the following core processes at a similar or larger SEC registrant: Monthly close, internal reporting, external reporting, technical accounting
Current and in-depth knowledge of technical accounting strongly preferred
Excellent process management and communications skills
