Responsibilities:

The Flight Safety Audit Lead Flight Safety Audit Program ensures that an emphasis on Safety is the highest operational priority in Flight Operations by maintaining compliance with all regulatory requirements and Flight Operations departmental strategy as it relates to audit activities. The Lead also monitors and reports to the Manager Flight Safety Assurance on all matters impacting Safety and regulatory compliance that arise from the audit program. The Lead also makes recommendations for corrective action and preventative measures.  

 

WORK ACTIVITIES/CONTEXT:

  • Provides oversight of, and accountable for, the Flight Operations Safety Audit Program.  Including, but not limitied to:
  • Maintains an awareness of Audit Program activities and results.
  • Maintains and updates all applicable audit criteria for Flight Operations.
  • Assures corrective measures are implemented, and unresolved issues are tracked and forwarded, as required.
  • Assists in evaluating audit results to determine trends and risks.
  • Coordinates with the Sr. Director Daily Operations, Compliance and Procedures for Flight Operations for voluntary disclosure cases when requested by the Manager Flight Safety Assurance and Senior Manager Flight Safety.
  • Assists in preparing voluntary reports and comprehensive fixes.
  • Assigns a member of the Audit Program Team to monitor any aspect of a voluntary disclosure case.
  • Attends meetings with the FAA personnel.
  • Advises the Manager Flight Safety Assurance and Sr. Manager Flight Safety on the status of any outstanding voluntary disclosure cases.
  • Serves as the liaison for Flight Operations for Safety Performance Evaluations, as assigned.  Including, but not limited to:
  • Assists in preparing corrective actions reports.
  • Assigns a member of the Audit Program Team to monitor any aspect of an Evaluation.
  • Attends meetings with Safety Performance Team personnel.
  • Advises the Manager Flight Safety Assurance and Senior Manager Flight Safety on the status of any Evaluation Findings, Observations or Recommendations.
  • Ensures the Audit Program personnel receive training in quality auditing, evaluation or pertinent management practices including SMS.
  • Participates in Safety meetings and continuing education programs, and maintains a relationship with the FAA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager Flight Safety Assurance.
  • Must be able to meet any physical ability requirements listed on this description.
  • May perform other job duties as directed by Employee’s Leaders.

Qualifications:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

 

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree required in one of the following areas - Human Factors, Safety, Aeronautics, or equivalent, or a minimum of three (3) years Southwest Airlines Flight Operations work experience required.
  • Southwest Airlines Leadership education preferred.
  • Formal auditor training required.   

 

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Flight experience and/or dispatch experience required, Part 121 preferred.
  • Three (3) years experience working with the FAA regarding regulatory compliance preferred.
  • Three (3) years of Leadership experience preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience with CFRs, OpsSpecs and FAA Order 8900.1 as it pertains to Flight Operations required.
  • Three (3) years of experience in Aviation Safety required.
  • Five (5) years experience in delivering presentations for both small and large audiences required. 

 

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION:

  • Dispatcher or Pilot Certification required.
  • Professional safety certificate from a recognized institution (i.e USC, NTSB) preferred.


PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • May require extended work hours per Leader's request.
  • 15% travel with potential for increase or decrease based on Flight Operations needs.  

 

SKILLS/ABILITIES/KNOWLEDGE/WORK STYLE:

  • Experience in developing presentations for both internal and external audiences preferred.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills as well as superb proofreading skills.
  • Must possess excellent computer skills with an ability to learn new programs quickly.
  • Must have organizational skills with the ability to manage tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work independently and as a Teamplayer.
  • Must be able to work under time constraints, with multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Must be able to understand complex technical documents.
  • Knowledge of instrument flying procedures.
  • Knowledge of Air Traffic Control procedures.
  • Knowledge of Minimum Equipment list procedures.
  • Knowledge of B737 AFM limitations.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to apply SMS principles in the operation.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to apply IOSA compliance. 
  • Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be energetic and self motivated, possess a strong work ethic, and maintain a high degree of credibility and integrity.
  • Must meet confidentiality expectations as to confidential, proprietary and sensitive Company information. 
  • Must maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelines.
