Manager, Software Engineering 2017-018
Astronics Advanced Electronic Systems (AES) is a division of Astronics Corporation (ATRO). AES is an industry leader in aircraft electrical power systems, including generation and distribution. Our markets include commercial transport (Boeing and Airbus), business jet (several), and military platforms. We are the world leader in in-seat power for laptops and other devices with our EMPOWER® product line. We are also a leading innovator of electronic circuit breakers and power distribution systems for business jets with our COREPOWER® product line. Astronics’ revenues have grown at 28% average growth rate over the last 5 years. AES, based in Kirkland Washington, has over 500 employees, and has won awards as the best place to work on the Seattle Eastside for 10 years consecutively.
The overriding business objective for the Software Manager will be to build a team of high performing software engineers to help AES successfully become the world-recognized leader in aircraft electrical power systems for small to mid-sized business jets, UAV’s and rotorcraft. The key performance objectives for this position are described below:
* Software Team Leader. The performance and development of the software team will be the responsibility of the Software Manager, which will require exceptional leadership, dedication and the ability to communicate the shared vision of the organization. The Software Manager will ensure this vision is embraced by the software team, and promote an optimistic, energizing and fun working environment. The SW Manager must also excel at all levels of communication to achieve a long term rapport and working relationship with their direct reports and peers, while building trust within the organization. The development of the software team will be accomplished through mentorship, guidance, and assisting staff members with defining and achieving goals while realizing their potential. The SW Manager will ensure the team’s skills and experience align with the near term objectives and long term vision of the organization, and as required, make any necessary adjustments. Values and behaviors are at the core of everything we do at Astronics AES. Leaders must exemplify the company values and behaviors, ensure their team fully understands and follows them in their day-to-day work. Within the first six months of employment, the SW Manager will embrace organizational objectives, becoming keenly aware of staff members skills and experience, establish trust within the organization, assess alignment of the team’s abilities with business needs, and begin taking steps to ensure the working environment is consistent with the company culture.
* Program Execution. Astronics AES development programs are staffed with a dedicated team of engineers, and each team is required to establish estimates, plans and schedules. The SW Manager is responsible for ensuring the estimates are appropriate for the given program, accounts for any risks, and supports the needs of the customer and our business. The ability to establish software development plans, and execute to those plans within the constraints of the business is critical to success. In addition, the SW Manager is responsible for overseeing the efforts of sub-tier suppliers through the establishment of agreements, oversight plans and overall business management. Within the first three months, the SW Manager will be expected to become intimately familiar with the current development programs, budgets, schedules, and ensure software development is on track. This also includes the development and use of common metrics and frequent communication between Manager, Software Leads and Software Engineers.
* Process Improvement Champion. Astronics AES Airborne Power System products are routinely used in flight critical systems. Embedded software, and software tools, must be developed with a level of rigor consistent with industry standard such as DO-178. This ensures customers configure and operate highly reliable and safe products. While developing these high quality products, the SW Manager must ensure efficient processes are in place to address the ever-increasing cost of development. To be successful, the SW Manager must fully understand industry standards, internal Astronics AES processes, and ensure all software development is not only compliant to standards, but also developed efficiently in support of product cost objectives defined by Program Management. The SW Manager will need to acclimate to heavy regulated processes, assess compliance, team efficiency, and identify opportunities for improvements within the first ten months of the hire date. This will include engaging software team members in the identification and implementation of improvements.
* Teamwork/Collaborator. The Astronics AES software team plays a significant role in the development of airborne power systems. As the corporate software center of excellence, the team also collaborates with other AES divisions in the development of their products. The SW Manager is responsible for ensuring top-notch support for internal development and inter-division projects. To be successful requires a team that possesses the skills and experience, and more importantly the mindset and positive attitude to work with engineering and management teams across functional and company boundaries. Within the first eight months, the SW Manager must assess the team’s performance against these objectives, and take any necessary steps to ensure they are well positioned to support continued growth in development efforts.

Technical degree required plus 10+ years related experience, including managing others. Aerospace experience strongly desired.
