Position Description

Plans, directs and coordinates all activities in the areas of safety and security. Ensures the efficient and economical accomplishment of providing a safe and secure working environment. Develops and implements policies, programs and procedures. Oversees compliance with all standards, laws and regulations affecting these programs. Analyzes, evaluates and addresses workplace hazards and accidents.
Position Requirements

Specific Accountabilities

 Researches, formulates, recommends and implements corporate policies and programs related to safety and security.
 Interprets government standards and regulations to ensure compliance with applicable workplace health and safety legislation. Acts in an advisory capacity to the organization on regulatory compliance matters.
 Designs and implements policies for personal protective programs (safety glasses, foot protection, hearing protection, etc.).
 Determines, implements and manages requirements for record archiving system.
 Directs the systematic inspection of machinery, equipment and working conditions to insure compliance with occupational safety and health regulations. Determines need for safety equipment.
 Directs testing of work areas for noise, airborne and other health hazards. Ensures use of appropriate resources. Analyzes report of findings and recommends protective action.
 Recommends improvements to facility, materiel, equipment or work processes which impact safety.
 Responsible for management of worker's compensation program within the company. Investigates and analyzes accident reports and statistical summaries. Ensures adequate corrective action is taken. Recommends other improvements toward better safety practices.
 Actively participates in the appropriate management team(s), assisting with the development and realization of strategic plans, budgets, goals and outcomes.
 Provides information, guidance and counsel to management on safety management, risk, and loss controls and responsibilities.
 Conducts regular and periodic safety meetings with corporate safety committee.
 Through information sessions, meetings, safety transmittals and other means, keeps managers apprised of unsafe conditions and practices. Recommends corrective and preventative measures.
 Exercises authority in hiring, training, career development, performance appraisal, salary adjustments, promotion, discipline, health, safety and the general employee relations of direct reports.
 Sources, manages, and negotiates various contracts and programs (i.e., benefits, training, systems, security, food services, drug/alcohol, recognition, employment equity, summer student, work experience, etc.).
 Carries out special projects as assigned.

Technical Requirements

 Thorough knowledge of local and federal health and safety standards and regulations.
 Strong planning, organizational, analytical, leadership, interpersonal, decision making, oral and written communication skills.
 Working knowledge of PC's in the current company operating system environment.
 Thorough knowledge of related company administrative policies and procedures.
 Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, or the applied sciences; or equivalent.
 Several years of experience as a safety officer.

Background Information

The typical minimum level of education to perform this job competently is equivalent to completion of a university (bachelor) program in a specialized field of study and work. The work requires a sound understanding of the underlying theoretical principles and concepts associated with the subject area and an understanding of the relation of these to the responsibilities of the job. This specialized training is often recognized by a degree and/or professional designation.

Directly/indirectly related work experience representing continuous learning and required for someone to perform this job competently is three to six years.

Must be a US Citizen or a US Permanent Resident per ITAR regulations.
