The Optical Engineer will be responsible for the following:
- Develop and design state of the art opto-electrical products designs for aerospace controls and electronic systems.
- Originate specifications, design documents, verification & validation plans & procedures, reports, or other documentation in support of design and development activities.
- Develop engineering drawings, modeling, and analyses for interferometer, filter based systems, and associated mechanical structures.
2)Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Design new products and modify existing products to support customer, manufacturing, applicable regulatory and industry standards, and market requirements.
•Perform design, analysis, laboratory tests & trouble shooting, simulation, stress analysis, worst-case analysis and field evaluations to assure compliance to customer and industry requirements; prepare the documents required to define the products (drawings, BOMs, reports, calculations, etc) and show verification of analysis.
•Participate on multi-discipline concurrent development and corrective action teams. Work with other engineering disciplines (mechanical, electric, quality, and manufacturing) to optimize designs, identify cost trade-offs and achieve successful product integration.
•Prepare, review, and approve the documentation required to define products. Prepare design proposals to present to customer once concept is finalized. Support design reviews, both external and internal customers as required.
•Evaluate design changes for impact to product and schedule. Implement design changes through ECO process.
•Coordinate and support the prototype manufacturing of new products.
•Support creation and implementation of test procedures for products based on requirements and customer specifications. Provide test and evaluation support including input to ATP and QTP test plans and procedures. Monitor testing and analyze data to verify performance of the prototype product to design and customer specifications. Review and approve test reports.
•Conduct failure analysis examinations and prepare Failure Analysis Reports (FAR) of findings.
•Participate in internal Design Reviews. Prepare for and participate in Preliminary Design Reviews (PDRs) and Critical Design Reviews (CDRs).
•Provide technical support to all internal departments, suppliers, and customers as it relates to the product.
•Provide direction on design for EMC issues at the PCB and system level. Review EMC Test plans.
•Demonstrated knowledge of opto-mechanical engineering for science instrumentation including filter, grating and interferometer based spectral systems.
•Demonstrated knowledge of optical engineering principles and procedures, including optical test techniques and associated instrumentation.
•Experience with LED, Lasers, CCFL, & incandescent circuit design and Understanding of operation.
•Hands-on experience with typical electrical test & measurement equipment.
•Ability to demonstrate analytical problem solving
•Experience designing illuminated panels for aircraft, SAE AS7788 standard preferred.
•Able to work well in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers.
•Able to generate specifications for manufacturing and testing.
•Knowledge of simple test software programming helpful.
•Knowledge of dimming control circuits for multiple light sources.
•Timeliness of estimates and reports for engineering projects.
•Strong communication skills with emphasis on technical writing and presentation.
•Ability to build prototype hardware for test and evaluation.
•Ability to function in a fast paced environment with minimal supervision, while performing multiple tasks.
Candidate skills & requirements
Basic Qualifications (all candidates must meet these requirements)
-Bachelor's degree in Physics, Optical or Mechanical Engineering and three years of Optical engineering or related experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
-Must be authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
-This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Skills and Abilities:
Preferred Qualifications (we would like candidates to meet these requirements):
-Working knowledge of sources (lasers, LED's, CCFL and incandescent bulbs), diffractive optics, optical materials, and thin films optics.
-Light source characterization using integrating spheres, irradiance meters, spectrometers
-Illumination design experience
-Knowledge of SPEOS or similar optical analysis tools
-Knowledge of Enovia or other PDM system for documentation control and workflow
-Knowledge of industry standards: DO-160, MIL-STD-810, SAE AS7788, chromaticity diagram with aviation colors, etc…
-Structured problem solving techniques and DFSS
-Demonstrated knowledge of optical instrument design forms (NIR and IR spectrometers, multispectral imagers, VIS/NIR/LWIR cameras).
