Optical Engineering at a Glance

This is amongst our elite teams at L3 WESCAM. Our Electro-Optical Engineers are responsible or what makes L3 WESCAM’s systems legendary – stabilized high-magnification electro-optical and infrared imaging systems. Our electro-optical engineers are often working on ground-breaking digital imaging, thermal imaging and laser positioning systems while navigating the complexity of integrating the latest optics technology into our world-class intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance systems.

While a lot of companies claim to have the best people – we can say with certainty that L3 WESCAM is the premier destination for some of the best and brightest optical engineers around. When you work alongside this kind of team, you will serve as a key member in a multi-disciplinary R&D team working on a wide variety of imaging and laser systems that are sought-after worldwide by a growing number of global defense, search and rescue and national security agencies. Subject Matter Expertise We Look For

Admittedly, expectations on this team are high – for a reason. Optics are at the core of what we do at L3 WESCAM, and the degrees of subject matter expertise vary. If your areas of specialization fit into any of the following, you should definitely join our Talent Community:

* Laser Systems

* Geometrical Optics, Lens Design

* Imaging, Radiometry

* Electro-Magnetic wave propagation

* Thin Film Optical Coatings

Your area of expertise may include something we need immediately, or later on down the road – but at some point in time, we’d like a chance to get to know you a little better.

Education / Academic Backgrounds We Look For

Our senior members of our team have achieved some of the highest levels of academics in the organization. Amongst them are Ph.D.’s and Masters in a collection of either Physics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics (with a specialization in Optics, Quantum Mechanics or Photonics).

Our junior and intermediate team members have started out their careers with Bachelors / Undergraduate degrees in Physics, or Engineering degrees with a specialization in Optics.

Skills, Experience and Competencies We Look For

While this list is in no particular order - if you are able to identify some of the following within your own inventory of skills and experiences, we would be thrilled if you joined others like you in our talent community.

* Strong analytical and mathematical skills,

* Proficient with Matlab or a similar language

* Proficient in optics and electronics lab environments (clean rooms etc)

* Understanding of analog and digital video concepts including:

* Colour science

* NTSC & PAL standards

* Digital video standards

* Resolution and sensitivity measurements (MRTD, MRC, NETD, MTF, etc)

* Familiar with a wide range of engineering fields (mainly Mechanical, Electrical & Software)

* Knowledge of Optical Design software (CodeV or Zemax) an asset

* Knowledge of range performance modeling tools (Modtran, NVTherm, SSCam, etc) an asset

We don’t just look for geniuses either – you’ll need to have a few other things to keep you balanced. For example, you’ll need all of your five senses to be on-point with the rest of us - Humour, Humility, Belonging, Urgency and Self. Also, the ability to play a musical instrument is also high on the list – we have 7 in-company bands and we’re always looking for a guitar lead or a drummer.

We also look for people who, in addition to the skills noted above, can bring some of the following real-life experiences to the team:

* You’ve verified proposed design solutions via a combination of analyses and tests

* You can actively support manufacturing organizations to ensure knowledge transfer, resolution of design issues and developing test methodologies

* You’ve made recommendations that supported design improvements

* You know how to ensure quality of design by teaming up with Mechanical, Electrical, Software and Systems Engineering to exploit any potential issues early

* Generating analyses summaries, specification documents and test reports

If you’ve written a White Paper on Optics, Digital Video Concepts, Lens Design, Image Science or Sensor Technology, tell us about it. If we haven’t already read it, we’d be like to….

Life at L3 WESCAM

This is the most important part. Many companies say that their work is ‘exciting’ or ‘challenging’, or that they work in a fast-paced environment.
