Technical Writer -- Contract

Duration: 12 - 18 months - Virgin America Headquarters, Burlingame, CA

Overview

The Technical Publications department is responsible for providing Virgin America with current manufacturer, component and company manuals. This is done utilizing industry leading software and hardware solutions. 

 

Mission:

Virgin America is in need of several experienced Technical Writers to assist in the manual updates and revision cycles in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulations and company policy.  The Technical Writer will engage in technical writing and documentation on various manuals which may include OEM, Operations and Company Manuals.

 

Main Areas of Responsibility:

  • Interact with the Technical Publications Document Management System vendor as needed.
  • Apply technical writing concepts and standards to templates, manuals, letters, applications and other documentation as requested.
  • Maintain content consistency across documents and manuals using established formats and structured authoring environment.
  • Assist in writing and maintaining policies, procedures and programs under the direction of the manual authorities.
  • Prepare publication drafts for review by the subject matter experts.
  • Responsible for the quality of materials after publication.
  • Maintains distribution, control, and revision service to ensure the timely distribution of appropriate manuals and revisions as required by Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and Alaska Airlines-Virgin America integration timeline.

 

Professional Experience Required:

  • Experience in writing and desktop publishing in an aviationenvironment.
  • Experience as the end-user of aviation technical, operational, and/or training information.
  • High literacy in structured authoring (SGML, XML) environment (ATA task numbering; typical DTDs/schema, elements and attributes). 
  • Experience using structured document software (Arbortext highly preferred).
  • Knowledge of interrelationships of airline functions preferred.
  • Must be customer focused and proficient working within tight deadlines handling multiple concurrent projects.
