Job Description

The Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) is the U.S. Air Force’s intended replacement for the Boeing LGM-30G Minuteman III ICBM weapon system, the land-based, silo-launched backbone of the nuclear deterrence triad. GBSD deployment is expected to begin in 2027, and GBSD will remain in service through 2075. Boeing Test & Evaluation (BT&E) is seeking a technical lead engineer (TLE) to lead and support multi-disciplinary teams in the development of standard test methods and processes and applies advanced test technologies to create or improve test methods. Writes invention disclosures to protect Boeing Intellectual Property. Prepares R&D proposals and presents to internal management and external customer. Applies emerging industry technologies to develop test procedures. Reviews critical procedures to identify potential problems and resolve issues. Oversees the integration of new design and manufacturing techniques into test hardware/system designs. Analyzes processes for potential improvements and recommends associated changes. Develops the standard policies for post-test activity. Resolves or oversees resolution of special test procedures. Works with the enterprise test and engineering group to standardize evaluation techniques. Formulates expectations for test data for new or unique tests. Trains and coaches others. Works under consultative direction.

 

The roles and responsibilities of the position include (but are not limited to):
  • Oversees debriefing of the test team. Evaluates test performance data and authorizes to break/alter configuration. Provides guidance in the preparation of special test procedures to support failure investigation. Authorizes the plans and schedules for the next test activities or events based on results.
  • Guides others in the design of test hardware, software and systems to achieve test requirements. Identifies required skills and tools and integrates them into the test team. Reviews and approves design and analysis to insure compliance with test requirements.
  • Develops and documents standardized test methods and processes to ensure repeatability and productivity.
  • Integrates system test plan into a master plan by defining test Statements of Work (SOW) for all test programs in response to customer requirements. Oversees development of test plans and verifies approach and resource availability. Prepares complex schedules and cost estimates. 
    Leads the development of test procedures. Applies lessons learned to the improvement of test procedures.
  • Leads the analysis, processing and formatting of data to customer requirements. Approves test data prior to delivery to customer. Formulates expectations for test data based on historical data.
  • Provides oversight for requirements gathering and tracks scope of requirements across complex programs. Assures accuracy and completeness of test requirements.
  • Directs others in performing tests in accordance with approved test plan/procedure and applicable policies. Initiates trouble shooting and addresses anomalies. Provides concurrence on decisions relevant to emergent conditions. Organizes collected data for review.
  • Leads others in the definition and oversight of test article configuration and demonstration of conformance to test specifications, established standards and regulatory requirements. Coordinates approval of test readiness reviews, safety reviews and data/control systems checkout to minimize risks. Communicates the status of test preparation activities to management and customers. Assigns and approves daily execution plans for effective use of all test resources.
  • Approves test reports to document test results and satisfy requirements. Presents test results internally and externally. Documents and initiates change on lessons learned and performance metrics to improve future testing and makes recommendations to improve processes.

Qualifications 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Experience in planning and conducting system level lab, ground, or flight testing.
  • Experience in developing detailed test points from system level specification requirements, test planning, execution and reporting test results.

Desired Skills/Experience: 

  • More than 10 years of experience in test planning, setup, execution and reporting.
  • More than 10 years of experience in complex test planning, development, and execution.
  • More than 10 years of experience as a technical lead for an engineering team.
  • More than 10 years of experience directly interfacing with customers and senior program leadership.
  • More than 10 years of experience conducting test in a lab or production environment.

This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.

 

Typical Education/Experience:

Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's 14 or more years' experience, Master's with 12 or more years' experience or PhD with 9 or more years' experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
